April 12, 2024 Blackmagic Design Announces Blackmagic PYXIS 6K Digital Cinema Camera

The PYXIS 6K Digital Cinema Camera comes in a versatile box or cube design, allowing you to equip yourself with the perfect camera for your production! The new model features a large 36 x 24mm 6K sensor with 13 stops of dynamic range and dual CFexpress media recorders, all packed into a customizable body. The Blackmagic PYXIS 6K is available in three models, giving customers the choice of L-mount, PL or locking EF lens body mount.

With multiple mounting points and accessory side panels, it’s easy to configure the Blackmagic PYXIS to the camera your customer requires. The compact body of PYXIS is made from precision CNC machined aircraft aluminum, and in addition to multiple 1/4" and 3/8" threaded mounts on the top and bottom of the body, Blackmagic PYXIS also features a range of side plates to further expand its ability to mount accessories such as handles, microphones and even SSDs.

Blackmagic PYXIS uses a large full frame sensor with a native resolution of 6048 x 4032. Whether the user is shooting in bright sunlight or in almost no light, the 13-stop dynamic range and dual native ISO up to 25,600 (ISO400/ISO3200) provide amazing low-noise images in all lighting conditions, capturing richer image details and a wider dynamic range, giving the images a "cinematic feel."

Using the entire area of the sensor provides customers with a unique open 3:2 image while also giving customers the ability to reframe the image in post-production. The large sensor also allows customers to work in true 6:5 anamorphic widescreen without cropping, making widescreen movie images more detailed and higher resolution than before.

Blackmagic PYXIS is available in 3 models allowing customers to choose between L-mount, EF or PL lenses, making Blackmagic PYXIS compatible with the world’s widest range of film and photographic lenses. L-Mount models work with the latest full-frame lenses from Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma, but can also accommodate lens adapters, allowing customers to use a wide range of new and vintage lenses. The EF models allow customers to use high quality photographic lenses they already own with their DSLR or even the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Alternatively, the PL model allows customers to use professional cinema lenses from Zeiss, ARRI, Cooke, etc. without the need for adapters.

Blackmagic PYXIS can shoot in all standard resolutions and frame rates from HD to DCI 4K and even 6K. Customers can even take 24.6-megapixel still photos. The Blackmagic PYXIS will shoot at up to 36 fps in 6048 x 4032 3:2 open ended, or 60 fps in 6048 x 2520 2.4:1 and 60 fps in 4096 x 2160 4K DCI. For higher frame rates, customers can turn on the sensor and shoot at up to 100 fps at 2112 x 1184 Super 16.

The built in LCD on the Blackmagic PYXIS is more than just a simple status display. It’s a 4-inch high-resolution HDR touchscreen, also perfect for monitoring and reviewing footage on set. Its Full HD resolution means customers don’t need to carry around a bulky external monitor to frame and focus. Customers can even use the monitor as a focus assist station.

Blackmagic PYXIS features a logical design that puts important functions like ISO, WB and shutter right at your fingertips via both touchscreen and physical controls. A row of three customizable function buttons means customers don’t have to dig through menus on a small screen to find a command. You can even lock controls to prevent accidental changes to settings during a shoot or when the camera is out of reach on your device.

Innovative side panels further expand the camera's assemblability. The standard plate included with the Blackmagic PYXIS is made from the same aircraft grade aluminum as the camera body and features a 2 1/4" threaded mount and a 3/8" threaded mount to allow customers to add microphones, stands or other accessories. Alternatively, customers can connect the included SSD plate, which provides a convenient location to securely connect a USB-C drive for recording, or even a phone for live streaming.

Blackmagic PYXIS records in Blackmagic RAW so control over detail, exposure and color is preserved during post-production. It also records HD H.264 proxies on the fly, making it easy to share your media around the world in just minutes. It has many professional features needed for filming feature films, TV shows and documentaries, and these features can also be directly connected via smartphone and applied to platforms such as social media and YouTube videos to create high-quality content with a cinematic texture. This means images are always maintained with unprecedented resolution and color, keying, compositing, reconstruction, stability and image quality.
Get high-end, cinematic production quality for any type of production, whether it’s a low-budget independent film, a TV commercial, or a corporate video.
Blackmagic PYXIS 6K will be available in June 2024 from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide, starting at US$2,995.
